Mission Statement

The Null Set, or empty set, contains absolutely no elements. It is zero in set theory, an absence of any item. Such as a set of all months with 33 days. It is something with no answer. It is absence, it is impossibility, it is nothing.

During my first year at New College, before the takeover, I was told that the school's mascot was the Null Set. I asked why. I was told that, during the meeting to decide on a mascot, as it had been going on for quite some time, they just put a null set symbol in as a placeholder.

That placeholder remained and became a mirror of its institution, holding the intelligence, non-conformity, quick wit and irony of the campus populace. I found that mirror reflected me as well.

It is now my last year at New College, after the takeover, and much has changed. We have been made an example of for the sake of bettering our flaws, and now that spirit of the Null Set, of New College, is going, if not gone. Still, there are those of us who have endured. There are those of us who only know the current new New College and crave a place that they can truly belong in, not just another college. Must we, new and old, abandon the values that once made this institution feel like a true school for the curious, the creative, and the dedicated?

I find an opportunity in [nullspace], and The Review (student editors and club members), to make a voice for those of us that feel like nothing within this new institution, in this world. I see a chance for nothing to be something. So let us encourage cleverness, humor, irony, and variety. Let us give the people of New College a home that they can use their voices freely, to safely express themselves, to connect with one another, and to develop sharper tongues and thoughtful minds.
